President Hichilema Assents to Bill 7, Marking Landmark Reform
President Hakainde Hichilema today assented to Bill 7, officially making it law at a colourful ceremony held in Lusaka.
At exactly 11:26 hours, the Head of State appended his signature to the document, completing a legislative process that he described as historic and belonging to all Zambian citizens.
“Today is a great day that has been written in the annals of history. Today, we complete a process that belongs to all Zambian citizens,” President Hichilema declared.
The President emphasised that the amendment represents positive reform and greater inclusion of societal groups that have long been excluded from governance processes. He particularly highlighted the role of young people, noting that the youth form the majority of the population and must be reflected in legislation and the national budget.
Reflecting on the debates surrounding the Bill, President Hichilema acknowledged that while discussions were divisive, they ultimately enriched the process. “Debates should not turn into enmity or hatred, but should enrich the process to attain higher value,” he said.
He further urged the nation to now shift focus toward building the economy, increasing treasury income, and fostering unity and love among citizens.
The President also extended gratitude to the Technical Committee on the Amendment of the Constitution for their contribution in shaping Bill 7.
“This is about moving forward, delivering development, and addressing the challenges that remain in improving the lives of Zambians,” he concluded.
