President Hichilema Swears In Constitutional Technical Committee, Urges Inclusive and Cost-Efficient Process

President Hakainde Hichilema today swore in the Technical Committee on Constitutional Reform, calling on its members to uphold national diversity and deliver a process that reflects the interests of all Zambians.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony at State House, President Hichilema emphasised the importance of inclusivity, urging the committee to consider varied perspectives and stakeholder submissions with fairness and sensitivity. “Take into account the operating environment, and recognize that there are different interests, backgrounds, and perspectives,” the President said.

He directed the committee to produce high-quality work within a reasonable timeframe, noting that timely execution would help reduce costs and allow the government to allocate resources to other pressing national needs. The President explained that the initial constitutional reform process had been set aside following concerns raised by various stakeholders. He said the new approach is designed to pave the way for broader consultation and deeper national consensus.

He further noted that the selection of committee members was guided by principles of inclusivity, professional competence, gender balance, and religious representation.

The swearing-in marks a renewed effort by the government to advance constitutional reform through a transparent, participatory, and cost-effective process.

President Hichilema also swore in members of the Human Rights Commission, commending them for the successful completion of their first term of office and reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting their work. He acknowledged the critical role played by the Commission in upholding human rights, describing its mandate as both important and challenging.

The President assured the commissioners of continued government support, noting that their work is essential to Zambia’s democratic and governance systems.
