President Hakainde Hichilema today met with students from tertiary institutions in the Copperbelt Province, where he underscored the importance of youth participation in national affairs and received an endorsement as the preferred presidential candidate in the upcoming August 13 general election.
Addressing the gathering, President Hichilema expressed gratitude for the large turnout and support from the students and their unions.
“I am here to say to you, I have never seen anything like this in Zambia where all student unions are friends of a sitting president,” he said.
The Head of State urged students to remain actively engaged in civic duties, emphasising that they are leaders of today rather than the future. He assured them that government initiatives, including meal allowances, hostel construction, bursaries, and skills training, will continue to improve student welfare.

“We will continue working for you as we restructure the debt and build on the gains. We do this because we love and care for you,” he added.
National Council of Students Union (NACOSU) president Michelo Chizombe voiced support for President Hichilema’s candidature, while his vice president, Lloyd Nsonge, cited the goodwill the president has shown towards students as the reason for the support from the student population. Copperbelt University Students Union president Given Chipewo also praised President Hichilema for advancing progressive policies that have strengthened Zambia’s education system.
