President Hichilema Assures that Zambia Will Not Return to Violence

President Hakainde Hichilema has assured that Zambia will never return to the days of political violence, warning against vandalism and hooliganism.

“This country will not be allowed to return to vandalism, hooliganism, street fights in the bus stops, in the markets. I stand here to say, not under our watch,” President Hichilema said.

Speaking during the Evangelical Church in Zambia (ECZ) Matero Congregation Diamond Jubilee celebration service today, the President recalled the hardships of past political turmoil.

“It was a difficult life to lead in those days. I know it better than many think, how I had to go through the roof at the radio station, and how our members lost family members who were shot at, killed in the name of political hooliganism, but carrying a more flamboyant word. Zambians, don’t forget, you had commanders in the compounds, not official military. Today, you don’t see people wearing military attire because we have said no to that. People were carrying guns like they were toys, we said no to that,” he said.

He stressed that no one should hide behind political parties, ethnicity, or religion to perpetuate violence. “Do not take us back to those days under the guise of anything,” he added.

President Hichilema further emphasized equality among citizens. “There are people who feel that this government is alien; this is your government,” he said, urging the church to continue guiding the youth and parents to raise responsible citizens.

He thanked the church for its contribution to food security and its role in promoting honesty, integrity, and service, describing it as a reflection of sacrifice and resilience.

ECZ Presiding Bishop Paul Mususu said the President’s attendance at the jubilee celebration was a statement of support for the church’s role in national development. He condemned those who threw stones at Chiwempala market during President Hichilema’s recent visit.

Bishop Mususu praised the prevailing peace in the country and commended the development taking place through the Constituency Development Fund.
