First Lady Emphasises Health and Empowerment During Chipata Hospital Visit

First Lady Mutinta Hichilema has underscored health care as a fundamental pillar of national development and the foundation for building a healthy and productive population.

Speaking during her visit to Chipata Central Hospital, Mrs. Hichilema said that, alongside health, economic empowerment, particularly for women and youth, remains a cornerstone of sustainable development.

During the visit, the First Lady donated assorted items to support the hospital’s operations, noting its critical role in delivering health services to the community. The donations included sewing machines, bags of mealie meal for the elderly, blankets for the elderly and vulnerable, raincoats for boys and girls, chitenge materials, bales of sugar, and cases of cooking oil.

Mrs. Hichilema expressed hope that the contributions would ease the hospital’s operational challenges. She emphasised that the sewing machines were not merely tools, but a pathway to financial independence.

“They will enable women and young people in this community to learn skills, start small businesses, and generate income for their families. When a woman is empowered, she uplifts not only her household but also her entire community,” she said.

The First Lady added that the initiative aligns with the government’s national vision to empower citizens at the grassroots level. She also extended gratitude to the organisations that partnered in the donation, including the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), Lusaka Indian Ladies’ Association (LILA), Zambia National Commercial Bank (ZANACO), and the Gladys Mwansa Masabo Foundation.

Mrs. Hichilema further thanked traditional leaders for supporting the activities of her office
